Kathak Yoga - Innovations of the Gurus
Kathak Yoga was coined and developed by Pandit Das as part of his own sadhana, or deep, spiritual practice. Drawing inspiration from the great sadhus and yogis Pandit Das delves into the depths of the complex mathematical and spiritual nature inherent in Kathak dance to brilliantly and naturally challenge the dancer's mind, body, and soul as one. An innovation from deep within the tradition, Kathak Yoga is a major contribution in the field of Kathak and has been the subject of a dissertation at Harvard University.
Kathak Yoga is both a technique to behold and an experience of meditation in motion - a way to push beyond one's personal physical and mental boundaries. With the weight of the ghungroo, simultaneously singing and maintaining taal, dancing complex rhythms and adding layers of instrumentation with manjira, harmonium or tabla, for example, this becomes a highly cardiovascular, cognitive and spiritual exercise. Ultimately, Kathak Yoga can test one's mental and physical stamina as a means to overall holistic health and an expression of pure bhakti, when all can become one.
The technique continues to evolve as it is passed on to the next generations throughout our international Chhandam School with over 500 students age 4 to 64 and up who learn this technique from day one as it develops an even deeper understanding of laya (rhythm) and connection to the Self through the dance.
A dynamic display of rhythmic complexity, physical and mental stamina and endurance as well as while maintaining beauty and grace. Shabd is a critically acclaimed presentation featuring Pandit Das' groundbreaking technique of Kathak Yoga, a significant contribution in the field of kathak and beyond. Without musical accompaniment the dancer(s) layer singing and instrumentation on top of dance movement in this meditation in motion. A true challenge of the mind, body and spirit resulting in an undeniably elevated energy for all who experience and behold it.
